As Christmas knocks at the door, our hearts are filled with excitement and joy looking forward to the time of celebration with our family, friends and loved ones and to colorful Christmas tree decorations, food, fun, fellowship and much more. But what I enjoy the most is the gift exchange, especially to see the excitement in the eyes of the kids as they hold and open the gifts.
Every Christmas we are reminded of God’s perfect gift for us – the gift of eternal life through His son Jesus, and the package that comes along with it. That package is the beautiful and precious “Gift of Healing.” To heal the broken is one of the missions of Jesus as written in Isaiah.
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners”
Isaiah 61:1
We all need healing in this broken world. Jesus is our Master Healer. The Bible says that Jesus went throughout Galilee teaching, proclaiming the good news, and healing every disease and sickness among the people (Matthew 4:23). Healing is a journey of making or becoming healthy again, going from brokenness to wholeness, overcoming an undesirable condition, mending. But to begin the journey, we have to take a step of faith in Jesus and humbly offer Him our brokenness, trusting Him wholeheartedly to heal us.
First Steps of Faith
In Matthew chapters 8 and 9, both the leper and the woman subject to bleeding for 12 years desperately desired to be healed and took their first steps of faith walking through the crowd, facing the uncomfortable with boldness and courage.
According to the law and culture of Jesus’ time, lepers and women while bleeding were considered untouchable, ceremonially unclean, and excluded from society. Not only did they have to endure physical sickness, but they also faced the emotional suffering of shame, fear, loneliness, and hopelessness. When Jesus healed the leper and the woman, He ultimately healed their hearts and their minds. Jesus touched a leper who couldn’t be touched. He saw a woman who had been unseen.
Growing up I was always a healthy girl and never had health issues that bothered me much. Also, being a homeopathic physician, I have always understood healing more from a physical point of view. I treated many patients and helped them to recover. But everything changed after I went through a miscarriage in 2018, after five weeks of conception in 2018 and then was never able to conceive again due to multiple uterine fibroids.
I was so broken within, frustrated, embarrassed, and ashamed. I felt like a failure – helpless and hopeless. But, thanks to the pandemic, I was able to attend online sessions on trauma, healing, and the grief journey. I learned that there were much deeper wounds from my childhood abuse and past sins of immorality that had ripped apart my self confidence and numbed a piece of my heart. My mind was chained with the lies from the devil that I am not good enough, something is wrong with me, I am unworthy and don’t deserve to be in God’s kingdom. I desperately started to desire healing from within since then. Like the psalmist says…
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Psalms 51:10
I had to learn to trust God in His perfect process of healing, meditating on His promises.
… for I am the LORD, who heals you.
Exodus 15:26
Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved,
for you are the one I praise.
Jeremiah 17:14
I never thought that the brokenness of my miscarriage would be a journey to a much deeper healing within me. God knows the perfect process; though it is not always easy.
Encounter Jesus’ healing daily through prayer and scriptures
Though Jesus is not present physically in our world today, He is always present in our hearts. Our sincere prayer of faith touches the edge of His cloak and heals us from our shame, guilt, and loneliness. His Word demolishes the lies that chain our minds when we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ ( 2 Corinthians 10: 5). We become like the demon-possessed man who had been in chains. He was released and then sat at the feet of Jesus in his right mind. Jesus heals us emotionally and spiritually, mending and restoring us to wholeness.
Imagine watching the healing of the leper and the woman subject to bleeding in a 3D view from an HD camera, viewing every single cell and organ being restored and mended to wholeness. Imagine the joy in their faces and sparkle in their eyes! Amazing! No matter how broken and wounded we are, there is nothing that Jesus cannot heal. All we need to do is take a step of faith and begin the journey of healing.
Questions for Reflection:
-
Ecclesiastes 3 says that there is a time for everything and healing is one. How could this Advent season be a time to heal?
-
What brokenness are you still trying to fix by yourself? What is stopping you from taking a step of faith?
Today I Will:
Spend time alone in reflection. Stop and consider if there is any wound deep down that needs healing. Make a list of scriptures that you can pray through. Consider sharing with a trusted spiritual guide or friend who also can pray for you. Engage in activities that help you heal, like going for a walk, watching the beauty of nature, etc.
