- Romans 8:1
- Galatians 5:1, 22-23
- 2 Corinthians 3:17-18, 4:16
As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we remember that His coming fulfilled God's promise to bring us freedom from sin and bondage. This is the true gift of Christmas—the gift of freedom in Christ.
"If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31-32
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…
Romans 8:1
But what does this gift of freedom look like in our lives?
A Testimony of Freedom
Growing up, my life was marked by pain, shame, guilt, and feelings of unworthiness due to my parents' divorce and fights. But in Jesus, I found freedom.
Empowered by this freedom, I arranged a meeting for my parents (my dad, mom, and stepfather), creating a safe space for them to express their failures and shortcomings after my dad got baptized at the age of 78. I found tremendous strength, joy, and support from my husband and in-laws to serve my dad when he was bedridden, and God’s grace allowed me to release all my embarrassed emotions too. I also reconciled my guilt and shameful experiences with my mom, giving her freedom as well. In a remarkable turn of events, my dad asked forgiveness from my mom before leaving this world.
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.
Galatians 5:1
I’ve learned that freedom is a continuous process and it’s contagious. Whenever I feel trapped by trauma or weaknesses, freedom in Christ brings renewed strength. His birth brought us this freedom, and His power perfects my imperfections through God’s word (2 Corinthians 3:17-18, 4:16).
As we reflect on Jesus’ birth this Christmas, let’s remember: “I am complete and a unique creation of God.”
Your story, my story, our stories intertwined with triumphs and wounds, are part of God’s greater plan. Jesus paid the price to set us free.
To find your freedom and begin healing from your past, try the following exercises:
- Reflect on triggers, patterns, and physical sensations.
- Explore your thoughts through journaling, mindfulness, and conversation.
- Heal with the Holy Spirit through professional help, self-care, and supportive relationships.
The power of writing—aligning thoughts, feelings, and words—shows we are respectful and serious about experiencing deep freedom.
Let’s shine light on the shadows in our lives this Christmas, and walk together toward the liberation that Jesus’ birth brought us.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control...
Galatians 5:22-23
Reflection Questions:
- What areas of your life need freedom from bondage?
- How can you share your story to bring freedom to others this Christmas season?
- Ask God to reveal areas where you may be holding onto shame or guilt.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
I thank You for the priceless gift of freedom through Christ. This Christmas, fill my heart with the courage to embrace that freedom fully—walking boldly in Your truth. Break every chain that holds me back, and lead me into a healing, wholeness, and transformed life. May I experience the fullness of Your love, grace, and power, reflecting the light of Jesus in every step I take. Let this season be a time of deep renewal and lasting change.
In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
