Mary Visits Elizabeth: A Gospel Partnership

Scripture: Luke 1:39-45
Mary just received a visit from an angel telling her the BIG plan! Her initial reaction: fear and doubt. Of course, that is understandable. But her heart and resilience proved why she was called to be the mother of the Messiah.
Mary wasted no time and traveled to visit Elizabeth. Two of the most important women who have ever lived took the time to be there for each other. They took this opportunity to bond, be vulnerable and strengthen each other. They are a picture of great love, courage and submission to God’s will. They shared the same calling: to carry and to rear men who would change the world forever!
What an inspiring story of not just mere obedience, but submission. “Obedience” is great but may not always include our hearts. However, “submission” means “yielding to power or authority out of respect and love for those in power.” There is something about Mary’s and Elizabeth’s spirit that goes beyond obedience. They connected to the whole plan of God. They did not just obey, but willingly agreed. They took God’s plan to heart and made it their own.
In Luke 1:41-45, Elizabeth was in awe of Mary. It would have been so natural to feel jealous and to think, “Ok, right . . . your son is going to be greater than mine. That’s not cool!” Yet, Elizabeth expressed joy! In response, Mary replied with great confidence. (Luke 1:48b) Both mothers-to-be showed great humility and sobriety toward each other as they embraced God’s calling. They had no drama; just complete partnership.
I love their story. It reminds me of my friendships and partnerships in the gospel. I am who I am today because of all of them. We can all work hard to advance God’s kingdom, but having these relationships give more color and meaning into all the hard work. We live to see people’s lives change for God before our very eyes; and the laughter and tears, the planned vacations and spontaneous hang outs are all sure to provide us the second wind to endure.
Questions for Reflection:
- How is your submission to God’s will in your life? When is it easy or hard to embrace His calling?
- If given the choice or chance, how would you want to spend time with your partners in the gospel of Christ?
- Who are some of the women who have shared with you in the ups and downs of the Christian life? How did their partnership strengthen you in your relationship with God? Consider spending some time over the next day or so to write an encouraging card or note to someone who has been a partner in the gospel to you.

Lola Olusegun - Loved the connection you made to gospel partnerships, These partnerships help me realise that I am not alone, everyone goes through challenges and difficulites in their walk with God. They also create neural pathways of empathy, kindness and love for one another which deepen over time. They fill in deep colours the palette of my relationship with Jehovah God. Thanks for your sharing.

Lea Cidro - The areas of obedience and submission resonated with me a lot. I very recently overcame a challenge of forgiveness and your definition of submission clarified the moment I truly felt the weight of unforgiveness was lifted off my person. It's true, I first decided to obey but had lingering feeling of resistance that only left after several days because my heart joined my "thought" obedience. It took a little while for my heart to get there, but it did. I call Him my Lord because I gave my mind and heart to Him when I became His child, 21 years ago. It's the utmost respect I am able to show Him.
