Simeon: Eyes that See
By Verónica Ortega
San Salvador, El Salvador
Scripture: Luke 2:25-35
Have your eyes seen salvation?
Surely your answer is yes! In my case, I saw salvation come into my life 30 years ago through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. By following His call, I have understood the great responsibility of living as Simeon lived—in a righteous, just and godly way; obeying first of all the word of God and living according to His will. In this way, the light of Jesus will shine through our lives and we will be able to bring that light to so many broken souls who live in darkness and are in need of love, hope and salvation.
I feel deeply grateful to God because salvation also came to my children. Two years ago, my son Aldo made the decision to be a disciple of Jesus. A year ago, my son Monserrat also decided to make Jesus his Lord and Savior. Now the whole family serves as missionaries in El Salvador Central America.
Just like Simeon, we as daughters of God must yearn to see with our own eyes the consolation of God for this lost world; especially in these unprecedented times when a virus has hit the entire world.
My 82-year-old mother, my aunt-her twin, my sister, husband and children were infected with COVID-19. My mother and my aunt spent three weeks in the hospital during which they were in intensive care. Thank God they overcame COVID and are better. But how many people do you know who have lost a father, mother, brother, or friend? And as this is the month of December, it will be a difficult month for celebration since there are many who are mourning the loss of loved ones.
Do you know someone you could call to pray with, encourage, comfort, or carry the message of love, hope, and salvation through our wonderful Lord and Savior? This time of the year is a good opportunity to do it. During this Christmas season, even amongst all the distractions and busyness that come our way, may we have eyes like Simeon . . . eyes that see.
Questions for Reflection:
- What do you “see” when you think of your salvation in Christ? How has the knowledge of salvation changed your life?
- In what way do you see that salvation through Jesus can change the world?
What needs do you see among the people around you—your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors? What is something you can do today to help meet a need?
