The God of Our Comfort
By Melanie Lai
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. – Psalm 23:4b
When you think of comfort, what comes to mind first? Before I was baptized, I sought comfort in everything but God — worldly relationships, material possessions, the validation of others, and more. I searched in all the wrong places and ended up always trying to fit in with the wrong crowd. I tried to please others by being someone I was not and pursued my own worldly desires. All of this left me feeling empty, alone and insecure. I was like a lost sheep trying to find my own way in the world. Now, as I read the words, “Your rod and your staff, they comfort me,” I feel reassured that I am loved and in the care of a merciful Father who will never abandon me.
Just like a shepherd always carries a rod and staff to protect and guide their flock, I envision myself as the lost sheep that God, my shepherd, is constantly watching over. The rod symbolizes God’s tender care and protection in my life, while the staff symbolizes his guidance to keep me on the right path.
Even in the midst of losing my way when living for myself, God was still taking care of me. He used his staff to gently redirect me on the path he planned for my life and protected me with his rod as I made my way back towards him. Regardless of how far I drifted and how hard I tried to go my own way, God still patiently watched over me, with open arms, waiting for my return.
During times of overwhelming fear, doubt and insecurity, I can lean into the comforting presence of my Father, trusting that he is establishing my steps and leading me down the best path for my life. Though I used to feel alone and afraid, I now find peace and confidence in knowing that God is always by my side, through the good and bad times. There may be moments I lose my way, but I can rest assured that God hasn’t lost me. He sees me and he loves me. God will always guide me back when I stray from him.
Despite the fears and troubles I may face, I can take comfort in the fact that I am in the hands of my Shepherd. He is my refuge. He leads me gently and strengthens me through every trial I face. Will you allow God to do the same and comfort you throughout your life?
