Virginia Lefler Makes the Classic Spiritual Discipline of Christian Meditation Accessible
WTI Editors
Did you know that meditation is an ancient practice of God’s people in the Bible? If your impression of meditation is something like the notion of sitting on a Himalayan mountaintop, striving to empty your mind in an attempt to become one with the universe as you chant “ommmmmmm” — you are not alone! We are inspired by our brothers and sisters who have been rediscovering, practicing, teaching, and sharing about Christian meditation. Here is a sampling of resources from our ICOC family:
- Evangelist and Teacher Rolan Dia Monje of the Metro Manila church of Christ has a valuable chapter about Christian meditation in his book, Into the Psalms.
- G. Steve Kinnard has a series of three books from 2006 entitled The Way of the Heart, exploring twelve classic spiritual disciplines. Meditation is found in Volume III.
- Robert Carrillo, of the Metro LA ICOC has a video series on spirituality which includes an introduction to meditation.
- Our editor, Tammy Fleming, was writing about Christian meditation in 2011. We found this article in the DisciplesToday archives.
- Elder’s wife (and now widowed) Linda Brumley addresses meditation in her book, Called to be Holy.

A couple of years ago, our sister in Christ, Virginia Lefler, launched what we think is one of the best online tools currently available to help us with the practice of Christian meditation. Her website, www.biblemeditation.com, and her accompanying YouTube channel feature fresh insights and offer simple, practical instruction, like this introductory Learn to Meditate video.
Virgina (sometimes writing with her husband and others) has given us superb biblical teaching and inspirational writing over the years. Although some among us confess to chucking A Gentle and Quiet Spirit across the room the first time we attempted to read it, its truth-speaking won us over; and its wisdom became an important foundational brick in our collective understanding of what a tremendous blessing and responsibility it is to live life as a woman in God’s family.
Virginia is an important and gifted writer and teacher in our midst. We’re grateful for her current focus on Bible meditation!
